How do you find a shared apartment in Illkirch-Graffenstaden?
Here are a few steps you can follow:
-
Use shared-housing websites: there are many specialized platforms such as Appartager, Roomlala, or La Carte des Colocs. These sites let you create a profile, search for available rooms, and contact owners or roommates.
-
Use social media: social networks can also be an effective way to find a place. Join local Facebook groups and post a message expressing your interest. You can also contact people directly who are looking for a roommate in those groups.
-
Check local newspaper listings: local newspapers such as Les Dernières Nouvelles d’Alsace, as well as online classifieds, can also be a source of information.
-
Ask around: you can also ask friends, family, or coworkers if they know anyone looking for a roommate or if they have tips for finding shared housing in Illkirch-Graffenstaden.
-
Contact real estate agencies: local agencies may also offer shared apartments. Don’t hesitate to contact them to learn about their listings.
It’s important to take the time to think through your needs and expectations before looking for a shared apartment. Make sure it matches your criteria, and take time to meet your future roommates before making a decision.
Which neighborhood should you choose in Illkirch?
The city is located in the southern suburbs of Strasbourg and is made up of several neighborhoods, each with its own character. Here’s an overview of a few areas in town:
-
Downtown: the city center is located around city hall and Place de la République. It’s a lively area with many shops, restaurants, and services, and it’s well served by public transportation.
-
Graffenstaden: located in the western part of the city, this is a residential area with many single-family homes and small apartment buildings. It’s quiet and pleasant, with green spaces and sports facilities.
-
Innovation Park (Parc d’Innovation): located in the eastern part of the city, this modern district includes company buildings, research labs, and universities. It also has student housing and residences for researchers.
-
L’Ill: located in the northern part of the urban area, close to downtown Strasbourg and well served by public transportation. It’s a developing neighborhood with new housing and cultural facilities.
The right neighborhood depends on your preferences and needs. If you want a lively area with shops and services, downtown could be a good option. If you prefer a quiet residential neighborhood, Graffenstaden may be a good fit. If you work or study in the Innovation Park, it makes sense to look there. Finally, if you want to be close to downtown Strasbourg, the L’Ill area is also worth considering.
What budget should you plan for?
The budget depends on the type of housing you’re looking for and the location. Here’s a rough overview of average prices for different types of housing:
- Studio: €400 to €600 per month
- 1-bedroom apartment (2 rooms): €500 to €800 per month
- 2-bedroom apartment (3 rooms): €700 to €1,000 per month
- House: €1,000 to €1,500 per month
These prices are for reference only and can vary depending on location, size, and condition. Downtown housing is generally more expensive than places on the outskirts. Recently built or renovated units are also often more expensive than those needing work.
It’s important to note that your monthly housing budget isn’t limited to rent. You should also consider utilities (water, electricity, gas, internet, etc.), which can vary depending on the type of housing. There may also be agency fees if you go through a real estate agency.
If you choose shared housing, prices can be more affordable because costs are shared among roommates. Your budget will then depend on the number of roommates and shared expenses.
When should you start looking for a shared apartment in Illkirch?
It’s recommended to start looking several weeks—or even several months—in advance. That way you’ll have a wider choice of apartments and potential roommates.
The best time to search is usually summer, when students move out and new students arrive for the start of the academic year. So it can be smart to start at the end of spring to make sure you find the right place before the new school year begins.
You can also find shared apartments throughout the year, but there may be fewer listings, and competition for the most attractive places may be higher.
Start as early as possible and clearly define your search criteria to find shared housing that meets your needs. Specialized websites, social media, and local newspaper listings are common ways to look for a shared apartment in Illkirch-Graffenstaden.

Learn more about Illkirch-Graffenstaden
The municipality of Illkirch-Graffenstaden—more commonly called “Illkirch”—is a suburb located south of Strasbourg, with a population of around 26,000. Being close to Strasbourg and home to a major campus has increased housing demand, especially for furnished rooms in shared apartments, which in turn has driven rents up. As a result, more and more people moving here choose shared housing.
Renting a room in a shared apartment in Illkirch-Graffenstaden not only helps you lower your housing budget by reducing rent and shared expenses, it also means you won’t live alone—you can meet new people and enjoy a larger, more comfortable home than if you rented on your own. Student shared apartments are especially common in Illkirch-Graffenstaden thanks to its proximity to the Illkirch campus, which hosts several parts of the University of Strasbourg and a number of top schools.
Illkirch-Graffenstaden is also an attractive economic, commercial, and cultural hub located south of the Strasbourg metropolitan area. Crossed by the Ill River and the Rhône–Rhine Canal, the city benefits from a privileged environment with a large forested area that gives Illkirch-Graffenstaden an exceptional quality of life.
Historically, the origin of the name “Illkirch” likely comes from a church (“Kirche”) built on the banks of the Ill River. The two separate villages of Illkirch and Graffenstaden merged during the French Revolution. The city’s geographic location supported the development of agriculture and fishing.
Illkirch-Graffenstaden also has a long history of industrialization, which contributed to its economic and demographic growth— notably thanks to a locomotive and machine-tool factory known as the Société Alsacienne de Constructions Mécaniques (SACM). However, that factory closed in 1971. Today, the city hosts a world-class technology park specializing in biotechnology and information technologies known as the Parc de l’Innovation. This strong employment hub near Strasbourg includes many private and public laboratories as well as innovative companies.
The university campus also benefits from this exceptional location, with an IUT (University Institute of Technology), engineering schools, and—for example—the Faculty of Pharmacy.
Nature is present throughout Illkirch-Graffenstaden thanks to rivers such as the Ill and the Rhône–Rhine Canal, and lakes such as Lac Achard and Lac Baggersee.
The Illkirch–Neuhof forest is classified as a nature reserve and covers 9% of the municipality’s territory. It is rich in protected wildlife and plant life, with more than 550 plant species, 120 bird species, and many families of insects. Fort Uhrich, built between 1873 and 1876 by the Prussians, has been restored to create a place for walking and relaxation. It also allows visitors to have direct contact with a wide variety of free-roaming domestic animals.
Many popular cultural events take place in Illkirch-Graffenstaden, such as the Festival de l’Ill, the Fête du Peuple, and Printemps des Bretelles. Two venues that play a major role in the city’s cultural and artistic life are L’Illiade and Vill’A. L’Illiade offers a wide range of cultural programming including concerts, shows, talks, exhibitions, and more. Vill’A is a space fully dedicated to arts education for people of all ages.
Illkirch-Graffenstaden is also known as a sports-minded city and is the birthplace of SIG, one of the best-known French and European basketball clubs. The city has many sports facilities available to residents, including 13 sports halls (6 of which are part of a complex), 5 gyms, 2 rugby fields, 3 soccer fields, a weight room, and various other dedicated areas.
